Sharing Badges on Social Media Actually Works

I have a confession to make: before I started working for Credly, I had absolutely no idea what a digital credential was, let alone its value. The world of earning and issuing verified, vetted achievements made perfect sense, and I wanted in.

I’ve been able to tell the story of how I would have loved to been able to use digital credentials during my job search, but even then, it was entirely anecdotal. I knew LinkedIn was a powerful tool in getting a job, or getting a better job, but I still had no concrete proof that anyone would actually care about my credentials, or even know what their value was. I only knew the value of LinkedIn from a marketing perspective - selling a fluffy version of your skills in an attempt to gain employment.

But, I recently earned a badge for being a Credly Evangelist Through Written Communication, and I was really proud of it. Most of my workday is spent creating inbound content so digital badge newbies understand their value, and I finally had a badge to prove that I was moving the needle. So I did what any millennial would do: I put my achievement on social media so I could broadcast it to my network.

The post sharing my badge garnered over 1,100 views in 48 hours. I don’t have 1,100 people in my network, so every time someone liked it or commented on it, it showed up in their feed as well, opening up my earned badge to an entire new network of people that may not have otherwise seen it.

I finally had a badge sharing aha moment. They work! People care! I’m not sure what I was expecting. I assumed it was going to get lost in the never ending newsfeed, where everyone is competing against an algorithm. That’s not what happened - former colleagues, new colleagues, former professors, old bosses - liked it, commented on it, and it spread. And now my proof of skills is out in the digital universe, and no one can take that away from me.
